Movie Review: “The Happening” (Spoilers)

If you have not noticed already, I really do enjoy movies 🙂  This past weekend on a rainy Saturday, I caught “The Happening.”  You have to respect those movies released on Friday the 13th.  While there were some laughs in the movie, it was mainly a horror movie.

Okay, normally movies trailers draw people in to movies and that was what happened this time.  The trailer initially kept me away from “Ironman,” but good reviews ultimately drew me in.  This time it was the trailer and not the Yahoo movies “C” reviews by both critics and movie goers like myself.

I do have to admit I like Mark Walhberg too 🙂

Today, the Environment has been a big concern and it was a theme in this movie.  I was a bit surprised that the trees and grass, the very entities that create the oxygen we breath, started to release a neuro toxin causing us the commit suicide.  That being said it there were very graphic scenes which did peak my interest.  I was kind of hoping for a Star Trek type of movie where the stars find a solution to the problem kind of like when Captain Kirk goes back to the past to bring a Humpback Whale to the present in order to respond to an alien probe whose communications are vaporizing the oceans and blocking the sun.  The stars deduce that the neuro toxins are released in highly populated areas first, targeting smaller populations in order.  So, in order to stay alive, they must continue to get into smaller groups and stay away from others.  Just when you think it is over……the trees and grass stop killing.  hmmm  Was this a precursor to the end of the human population?  As it was localized, the Government is blamed for chemical weapons testing, but at the very end of the short 90 minute movie…France is attacked!  AHHHHHHH!  Let’s hope there is NOT a sequel.

Movie Review: Ironman

So after the chit chat which pretty much ruined “The Strangers.” I headed to the Potomac Yard Regal Cinema to catch “Ironman.”  The initial preview did not entice me to see the movie, but the good reviews peaked my interest.

I don’t remember how long “Titanic” was, but long movies tend to make me restless.  I am happy to report that I did not look at my watch for the entire 2 hours and 6 minutes!  Now that is a engaging movie!  It was exciting like “Batman Begins.”  The technology was very cool.  While the metal to human skin integration has always made me squeamish, it was on the big screen for just a few minutes.

While I don’t have much to say as I don’t really know the story or what to compare it to, but I would say it is in the likeness of Batman.  So all you Batman lovers, check out Ironman, you won’t be disappointed!

What does Courteous mean at the Movie Theatre?

Well….while no cell phones were ringing, there was plenty of talking at “The Strangers” tonight at the 7:20 showing in Chinatown at Regal.  It must be something about thriller/horror films that people need to talk through them to not be scared.  There were 3 guys behind me to were talking about everything…. predicting what would come next.  I only was surprised once to jump a bit in the movie.  There were some parts too where you could see the killer with a raised axe in the air.  What does one think would happen if an axe was held in the air?  Perhaps it would be brought down and make a noise?  Apparently those next to me and behind me who were talking or texting with their cell phone flash light did not have a clue.  The girls screamed and the guys got rowdy.

Sorry to complain so much, but while I looked back occasionally to show my annoyance, I did not say anything to them.  I wanted to leave, but Patrick, who really wanted to see the movie, was okay with staying.  It was so hard to hear the film at times with the guys behind us providing narration!

To conclude….those who get scared easily should NOT see scary movies!  Those who like to narrate should wait for the DVD release, turn on close captioning and off with the audio!  There is more to courteous than just not talking on your cell phone.  Perhaps that is a too complex word…and the theatre should say “No talking.”  IDK.  In any event, we will no longer be going back to Regal Gallery Place for scary / thriller type movies.  Basically kids seem to talk and any movie that would appeal to them should be seen elsewhere.

Movie Bloopers: No Reservations

One of my favorite movies….. you have to like cooking in order to understand it.  Many of my friends have borrowed the movie and not found it to be great 🙁

I have watched it 3 times the past 2 days….well more like listening to it, like I am now.  I have not noticed a blooper like this since the days of the original Battlestar Galactica and other low budget productions.  In Battlestar Galactica the Cylon march scene and the ship launches were used over and over again.

Blooper One:  Opening scene, apron on, asking for a Dover Sole and Lobster for Table 9…..check out minute 15…Dover  Sole and Lobster for Table 9.

Blooper Two:  Zoe has just come to stay with Kate…Kate needs to go to the restaurant for a bit and leaves the phone with Zoe.  Daylight is shining through the window…next scene….it is dark and she is walking into the restaurant which is just a few blocks away from her apartment.

Not a big deal at all…

Another movie with a noticeable blooper..  National Treasure – Scene where there are meeting Abigail Chase.  Assistant lets them into the room and leaves the room twice!  Check it out!
