Review: Underworld: Rise of the Lycans – Spoilers

WOW….Great Movie!

Let me start with that.  When you have seen Star Wars, and likely Star Trek FAIL at making prequels, you get a little skeptical.  I have to say I was pleasantly proven wrong!  The movie has the same characters as the others and at the very end……. leads right into the opening of the “first” Underworld movie.  Well done!

Victor is back as the head of the coven and does an excellent job in the movie.  Not sure it was the actor, but the part was great.  The love of a disobedient daughter to eventually having her executed following the protocol of the coven and leading the vampires.  This is definitely a hard task and he remains strong by following through with the execution.

I am not sure how long the movie was and even my partner was awake through the whole movie which is  a first.  So with that said, definitely a good movie to see.

You learn about the start of the Lycans and that there are 2 breeds. One that can sustain human form and another that is in animal form all of the time.  It was also interesting to learn that they Lycans were created in order to protect the Vampires while they were sleeping during the daylight.

As with most prequels, there is no need to watch the other ones before seeing this movie.  Let me know what you think.  This is definitely the best movie I have seen this year.  Last week I saw “The Unborn.”  I won’t even waste time talking about that horrible movie.

Blu-Ray SUCKS!

So I picked up Mama Mia! on Blu-Ray DVD today.  Besides only being $3 off retail at both Target and Best Buy, I have been sold on the 7.1 surround sound.  I don’t waste money on “regular” movies that aren’t based on a musical score.  So I thankfully am watching the newest in the Mummy saga.

I would like to be watching Mama Mia!, but my new Samsung BD-P1500 cannnot play it!  I updated the firmware which took what seemed like close to an hour just to download.  I own a Toshiba HD DVD Player and never had to update it.  Granted no new movies were released after the player came out, but I have heard from others that Blu-Ray has caused nothing but trouble and with Sony Blu-Ray players, takes around 3 months for a compatible Blu-Ray Firmware Update!  What! I thought Sony owned the specification.  I would think that perhaps there could be some kind of standard?  I do believe that every “standard” DVD will play in any DVD player from the beginning of time, but not Blu-Ray.  Needless to say I am upset and of course cannot return the movie and get the “standard” DVD, but may try to exchange it for another DVD so that the Movie Industry can reimburse Target for a “defective” disk.

If blu-ray does not sell this holiday season…movie industry executives may scrap Blu-Ray

Now that is an interesting statement I found online.  So I would be left with 2 dead DVD successors!

So….I am trying another firmware update…aparrently the one downloaded by the player was not the most recent.  Crossing Fingers.

Sold out James Bond!!!

So…today was a little rainy, a perfect one for dinner and a movie.  We headed to Chinatown for some Chinese food and to see the newest James Bond as it was showing almost every half an hour.

We finish with dinner around 6:00 and head over to get tickets….Sold Out at 6:30 and 7:30.  Not a big deal, we can catch the 7 PM show and browse Bed Bath and Beyond for a while before getting in line.  Just as we  were about to get to the counter, “Sold Out” shows up on the screen!  AHHH.  The next available showing was at 9:40 PM.  Since we needed to get up early tomorrow, we decided to catch Madagascar 2 instead.

Batman Dark Night in IMAX!

Just got back from a 5:35 showing of Batman at the Natural History Museum IMAX.  I had heard that portions were shot in IMAX and other portions would be in a letterbox format.

WOW… So much more was in IMAX than I expected and though I saw it once in a “normal” theatre, it was definitely worth the trip!  Quite a few of the action and cityscape scenes were shot in IMAX so the entire 66 foot tall screen was used.  You feel like you are soaring over the city with Batman and I almost got a little dizzy at one point as we were panning around a building top.

Check out Smithsonian on the Internet for showtimes and for just $12.50, see the biggest movie this summer, and hopefully of all time if it can pass Titanic (Fingers crossed).  You can avoid the convenience charge by visiting either the National Air and Space Museum or Natural History Museum IMAX box office.  Both museums are open until 7:30 PM during the summer tourist season.

I gave Batman a high rating before and the IMAX is definitely not a disappointment.  The weight and size of the IMAX cameras are currently prohibitive.  Hopefully the technology will advance to include a lighter, more compact camera with more movies released in an IMAX theatre near you!
