50th Anniversary US Space Flight

50 Years After…. 11 years of continuous ISS habitation and international collaboration.

While volunteering at the National Air and Space Museum today, a docent kindly told me about the historic event that is upon us.  Not only is tomorrow the day we celebrate our countries presidents, Monday, February 20, 2012, marks the 50th anniversary of John Glenn’s trip around the earth in a Mercury-Atlas capsule.  Dubbed “Friendship 7,” this was the first time that American’s had put a man in space.

While doing my kids demonstration today, I was proud to let them all know that tomorrow is a day not to forget in space exploration.

Don’t forget Able, the Rhesus monkey, that in May 28th, 1959 paved the way for US space flight.  If you recall 2 years earlier, the U.S.S.R. attempted to send a dog into space, but the dog did not survive. Trailing the U.S.S.R., in both earth orbit and space walk, the United States has been the only country to send a space explorer to the moon, something which China plans to do in the future.

Now 90, John Glenn continues to tell stories of his space exploration.

Website Update

Besides a few images or movie updates, I really have not changed my website since its creation in 2008.  For years later, it is time to start updating it with the new cool things like social media buttons so people can “like” or “tweet” me.

Integration…

So this is something I have wanted to do for many years, but did not have the knowledge at the time or perhaps the driving need, but it really does look nice when you have many different content streams all looking the same on a site.

My Goal

Ultimately I would probably like to have a background image and floating content like many sites out there.  I even think MySpace had that option many moons ago.

I would like to have multiple columns of data and the main page having my most recent photos, blog entries, movie updates, etc.

Progress

Last night with the help of WordPress FAQs and a very helpful external link off that page, I was able to integrate what I think is the first page of my blog, the posts anyway, into my site.  Since the code does not show a number and the number displayed is the same I am assuming if I change any options in WordPress to the number or length of posts on the main page, it will also change my site.

Expedia Poor Customer Support

60+ Minutes on Hold

I will elaborate later, but after waiting close to an hour to talk with a representative to perform a “Phone Only” operation, in this case refunding the Expedia Car Insurance, I plan to close my account if I get to person.

Must call Customer Support.

After canceling the related car reservation, you get prompted with a nice reminder that “You must call customer service to cancel car insurance.” One would think this would be a given, and certainly no require a phone call to do.

Account Closure

With so much competition out there, no need to have that account around!  I found a FAQ while I was waiting which detailed how to mange your account, including closing, but when I clicked on the link, was given an error basically saying I did not have permission to delete my account.    Guess I have to wait on the phone for this too!

Amazon Kindle Silences Cell Phone Speakers

The Disclaimer

Okay..so the only reason I am posting this is because it is soo odd.   I do pretty much all of my shopping on Amazon 🙂

The Discovery

After setting an alarm on his cell phone, Chris D. woke up late only to discover that the alarm had gone off according to the screen display, but there was no audio.    His cell phone was resting on his Kindle Fire.

The Deduction

When your cell phone touches your Amazon Kindle, the speakerphone ceases to function. Notification sounds are not heard.

The Experiment

Test subject 1

Name: Chris D….

Phone model: unknown

Kindle Model: Kindle Fire.

Test: Alarm set to wake from nap to come to work last night…was not heard, but visible that alarm sounded on screen.  Was late to work, but excused due to this strange observation.

Conclusion:  Speakerphone Malfunction.

Test Subject 2

Name: Roommate

Phone Model: Verizon Droid

Kindle Model: unknown

Test: Alarm set on phone.  Phone placed on Kindle.  Alarm went off, but no audio heard.

Conclusion:  Speakerphone malfunction.

The Conclusion

So…While it may be some weird interference in their house since both subjects were in the same residence, it seems to be that the Amazon Kindle somehow wants to be the “Alpha” electronic device and seems to silence others, or perhaps is the “King” and other devices bow down as loyal subject of the court should 🙂

The Credit

Thanks to Chris D. for the testing and sharing his findings.  Too bad he was late to work due to the strange phenomenon!
