Odeon Cafe – Homemade Pasta

Looking for a great place with atmosphere and good food at reasonable prices?  Check out Odeon Cafe on Connecticut Avenue NW near Dupont Circle in Washington DC.

Appetizer

Dinner started with Mozarella Sticks.  A favorite of mine and certainly from a box, but hey, totally expected and delicious as those frozen things are. 🙂

Next was the bread.  It looked like it was a frozen roll that was baked in house as it was still warm and very crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.  It was served with a homemade pesto and olive oil dip which was amazing.

Salad

On to the salad. $6 for a ceasar salad with homemade dressing.  The only thing I would have changed would have been using fresh “flaked” if that is the correct term, parmesian cheese instead of what appeared to be the dried stuff from the can that most of us at one time had in our fridge growing up.

Main Course

Lobster Ravioli in a Lobster Bisque $16.  WOW.  I know cream is good, but I try to stay away from it, but that Bisque was amazing!  The Ravioli along with all of their pastas is either made in house or by a local maker.  When I had originally asked what was homemade, the waiter said just the Manacotti.  He was thinking I wanted to know what was made in house.  For future reference I told him that since they get the pasta fresh locally, it is okay to say it is homemade even though not in the kitchen 40 feet away 🙂

Dessert

$6 Tirimisu – Homemade goodness 🙂

Reasonable Dinner – Great Homemade food!

Reasonable prices, homemade food, wide variety of menu items, great night out!  Give them a try.  They have an $18 Lobster Special which I have been wanting to try, but I am afraid with the word “Whole” in the name, that it may stare at me and I cannot deal with that.  LOL.

Pizza Mia – Boxed Pasta from $15

Save your money and throw a box of Barilla in the pot.

Not going to spend much time on this one, but just wanted you all to know that “nothing is homemade” at Pasta Mia.  This was from the mouth of our server which appeared to be one of the owners.

So…..

  1. Cash Only
  2. No Reservations
  3. Closed Sunday and Monday, open only for dinner starting at 6:30.
  4. Boxed Pasta

I think that sums up Pasta Mia in Adams Morgan in a nutshell!

Redbox $1 DVD Rental

WOW…Slum Dog Millionaire for $1

After looking for the “Pure Cane Sugar” Coke tonight at the local Harris Teeter, I decided to check out the Redbox by the exit which boasted $1 rentals.  I was thinking with todays marketing schemes like “up to 50% OFF,” or the Mega Bus $1 fares (If you book 3 years in advance.), that the $1 rental would be reserved for “The Breakfast Club” and other old classic movies.  I decided to research these mysterious “Red Boxes” when I got home.  I discovered that the machines are loaded weekly and DVDs are reserved online.

$7 Previewed DVDs

For those of you that don’t know, I tend to buy great movies the day they come out to get the best price, and for other movies that I like….wait until they go to the “3 for $20” or “4 for $20” at Blockbuster.  So when I saw $7 for a relatively new movie “Bolt,” I swiped my debit card….and in a few moments, out popped by DVD.  While it came in a rental box with no cover art or inserts, I did get a genuine DVD!

My Idea…..

I was thinking that the machine would burn DVDs on the spot which would simply require a network connection or a server of digital movies inside with a high speed DVD burner.  This way there would be no need to reserve movies online, and the kiosk would never be out of a title and have every title!  I would rely on Light Scribe to provide the DVD label and not sure about the sales.

Perhaps I would make DVDs that would work for a few days and expire like current rentals available at some truck stops across the country..I actually bought one for $4.99 to see if it indeed become unreadable after 72 hours…and it did!  If this was the case, I would put a deposit on the DVDs….once they were returned, and recycled, the deposit, probably $3 would be refunded to you.

Another option, sell the DVDs as the Redbox does.

Perhaps DVD burning is not fast enough yet, or the industry would not allow such media to be created, but my idea really is very easy and low maintenance!  All that you would need to do is stock blank DVDs and sleeves, probably paper or cardboard which is very recyclable, and update the machine with new movies if not directly connected to a high speed network connection.  The high speed connection would be the best actually.  I would have the new titles downloaded in the early morning to be cached on the server for instant burning.

So..not sure that I will subscribe, though it seems very nice at this point if there is no monthly charge, I may be stopping by to check out the “previewed” collection as they all cost $7.

A Pharmaceutical Promo Not to Accept

If you visit a doctors office, you likely see pens and pads of paper with different drug endorsements.  If you get a glimpse of the physicians computer, you will likely see a stamped mouse pad and I have seen even a promotional mouse!

Marlboro coat?

When I was a kid and tobacco companies were not censored in advertising, it was not uncommon to see a heavy smoker with cigaret gear.  My Scoutmaster had a coat, portable grill, and countless other products he received free from cigaret purchases.  Looking back, it is very sad that he was addicted…..

The Point….

Today while volunteering at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, I noticed a family with kids.  The mother was carrying an empty bag which was quickly filled with coats and passed to the father to carry.  It was a bright green bag with the product logo from “Cialis!”  What?  Do they have a program where you buy a years supply and get a free bag?  Is one of them a doctor and receive the bag as a bribe?  WOW!  I could not believe it!  Perhaps they did not know what the product was?  With all the commercials on television, one would think not.
